“I do!” - Weddings in movies

A cinematic journey through the most beautiful day of your life

For a long time, weddings were not particularly interesting for cinema. In classic Hollywood films, the period before the wedding, i.e. the turbulent phase of falling in love, seemed more entertaining and spicy. The fact that falling in love, after misunderstandings, conflicts and (romantic) rivalries, ultimately led to a happy ending was enough for the closing title ‘The End’ – there was no need to show the ‘harbour of marriage’. However, a marriage could still be torpedoed shortly before the wedding: think of classics such as ‘The Philadelphia Story’ (1940) by George Cukor or ‘The Graduate’ (1967) by Mike Nichols. Nevertheless, films repeatedly featured the theme of the ‘dream wedding,’ the most beautiful day in the lives of two people, celebrated lavishly and expensively as a portal to ‘heaven on earth.’ At some point, weddings even became a socially acceptable film theme and became the focal point of countless romantic comedies revolving around the preparations, the celebration, the exchange of vows and perhaps even the honeymoon. Our collection presents a surprisingly wide selection of ‘wedding films’ in terms of theme and staging: amusing, cheerful, dramatic – there should be something for every wedding planner. In addition, there are a few surprises that approach the theme in a more roundabout way.
