Detroit, Michigan. It is January 6, 1994, shortly before the Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, when the beautiful world of figure skating is abruptly shaken by the brutal attack on U.S. medal hopeful Nancy Kerrigan. But even more shocking is the fact that arch-rival Tonya Harding is allegedly involved in the attack. But how could it come so far Tonya grows up with a demanding mother, who does not shy away from abuse. Against all odds, she tortures herself to perfection on the ice. While she masters jumps and technical elements, she lacks charisma and elegance. When Tonya meets Jeff Gillooly, he helps her achieve the long-awaited separation from her tyrannical mother and at the same time creates a link to the disreputable underworld.
