"In ways large and small, HELL OR HIGH WATER is a movie so beautiful and harsh and elegiac and knowing, the moment it was over was the moment I wanted to see it again." (Richard Roeper, Chicago Sun Times)
Two brothers, an ex-convict (Ben Foster) and a divorced family man (Chris Pine), have only a few days to pay off the large debts owed to the bank by their recently deceased mother – otherwise they will lose the farm they inherited. But instead of trying to scrape together the money and most likely failing, the brothers decide to rob the source of their existential despair: a branch of the very bank that financially ruined their terminally ill mother.
When this robbery is a complete success, one robbery turns into two, three, four... A Texas Ranger (Jeff Bridges) who is about to retire is hot on their heels.
Chris Pine (“Star Trek”), Ben Foster (“The Messenger”) and Jeff Bridges (“The Big Lebowski”) play the antagonists in this thrilling, multi-layered American neo-western, which received four Oscar nominations after its Cannes premiere, including Best Picture. The highly suspenseful story was penned by Taylor Sheridan, who previously wrote Sicario (directed by Denis Villeneuve), a gripping drug thriller set in the desert. The film was directed by David Mackenzie (“Hallam Foe,” “Perfect Sense”), whose latest film, “Relay,” will be released in Swiss cinemas at the end of August 2025.
This thoroughly socially critical film about two self-empowered representatives of the working class in turbo-capitalism is a narrative force to be reckoned with – featuring characters whose fates tug at the heartstrings!
"What I love about Nick and Warren’s film music is that it’s epic and expansive without being grandiose. For me as a filmmaker this hits a sweet spot where the score is able to have scale and emotion but not feel manipulative or overwhelming." (Director David Mackenzie about the film's score by Nick Cave and Warren Ellis)
